Menahra – Middle East Harm Reduction Association

Report Brief

Newsletter – work stream Nov. 6th 2024

Early this year, MENAHRA concluded a needs assessment report that identified priority areas of interventions to support PWUDs of LGBTQI+ individuals and sex workers across four countries. This evidence-based report contributes from the community and highlights the multiple levels of complication these intersecting communities face. These pressing needs were summed up in some key findings of the report: inclusive access to healthcare, mental health services, harm reduction, and support systems inclusive to these groups.

MENAHRA, while compiling this report, held a series of meetings for validation across Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia, and Morocco, and included local civil society organizations and community members. The discussions brought together varying perspectives to determine the priority intervention and to align it with the needs of the community and the gaps in service delivery. Participants emphasized a multifaceted approach in the form of “service inclusivity”, network building in collaboration, and comprehensive capacity-building for providers. Evidence-based solutions and partnerships across sectors were pegged as vital to sensitive and effective service provision.

These reflections have now been translated into an action plan. MENAHRA is committed to translating this groundwork into impactful community-centered interventions that address the needs of LGBTQI+ people who use drugs and sex workers for a safer, more enabling environment across the region.

Further updates on these initiatives will be provided, as MENAHRA continues to work with a large number of partners and communities throughout MENA in driving the creation of meaningful change.
