Press release: MENAHRA and RANAA Regional Dialogue Focus Meeting

The Middle East and North Africa Harm Reduction Association (MENAHRA) and the Regional Arab/Network Against Aids (RANAA) conducted Regional Dialogue Focus Meeting to consult on the development of the MENAHRA/RANAA Global Fund Regional Concept Note.

The dialogue took place in Crown Plaza Hotel in Beirut, Lebanon, from 8 till 10 December 2015 in the attendance of national AIDS programs managers, representatives of United Nations organizations, civil society organizations, key populations (KPs), related parties and other experts in this field from the MENA region.

عقد البرنامج الوطني لمكافحة السيدا برعاية وزير الصحة العامة وائل أبو فاعور ممثلا بمستشاره الدكتور بهيج عربيد مؤتمرا صحافيا، لمناسبة اليوم العالمي للإيدز، تحت شعار "علاج الإيدز للجميع"، في قاعة محاضرات الإدارة المركزية للجامعة اللبنانية في المتحف، في حضور ممثلة منظمة الصحة العالمية رمزية صباح، ومدير البرنامج الوطني لمكافحة السيدا الدكتور مصطفى النقيب، وممثل الجمعيات الأهلية ماجد حماتو، وممثلين عن قوى الأمن الداخلي ومنظمات الأمم المتحدة والمجتمع المدني وحشد من المهتمين.

Position statement - World AIDS Day 2015

Beirut – 30 November, 2015

On 1 December, 2015, the "World AIDS Day", the Middle East and North Africa Harm Reduction Association (MENAHRA) calls for the commitment in the global theme "Treatment for all people living with HIV" through enabling all people, especially in our region, to get the necessary services and treatment for all people living with HIV.

At the end of the year 2014, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) there were approximately 35 million people living with HIV around the world, including 2.1 million people newly infected. Injecting drugs is among the most common methods of transmission of HIV in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. According to MENAHRA statistics, there are more than 570000 People Who Inject Drugs (PWID) in the region.

During the 24th International Harm Reduction Conference, organized by Harm Reduction International (HRI), in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Middle East and North Africa Harm Reduction Association (MENAHRA) Communication Officer, Mr. Hasan Fakih interviewed the Executive Director of Harm Reduction International (HRI), Mr. Rick Lines, where he presented a summary of the conference, preparations for the United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) on Drugs 2016, and the worldwide harm reduction situation.

“We wanted to showcase Malaysia as a model of good practice, but there still are barriers that need to be addressed.”
“The world is struggling with the mass of funding gap in harm reduction particularly in middle-income countries.”

The 24th International Harm Reduction Conference was held in Malaysia this year for a number of reasons, “obviously it's our goal to try to take the conference to different regions around the world, and part of that is to try to promote harm reduction in different regions of the world and also to try to provide a platform for people doing harm reduction in different regions to showcase the kinds of programs they are running and how they overcome the kind of global challenges of the deal with”, Mr. Rick Lines stated.

The Middle East and North Africa Harm Reduction Association (MENAHRA) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) conducted a “Technical Consultation on Engaging and Retaining People Who Inject Drugs (PWID) in HIV Treatment and Care”. The consultation was held from the 19th until the 21st of November, 2015 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Beirut, Lebanon.
